Renowned Ukrainian dance instructor Leo Piasta leads Veselka (Ukrainian for rainbow), assisted by Lisa Arkin, noted Eugene dance teacher.

With more than 70 dancers the troupe includes children, teenagers, and young adults. The dancing is intricate, athletic, and exciting. Dance styles from different areas of Ukraine are presented-from quick tempo, vibrant Cossack styles to elegantly beautiful Transcarpathian dances. The colorful costumes are authentic and handmade.

Dance performances are at noon and at 3:00 p.m. The performance is the culmination of an intensive two-week, all-day, workshop. Presenting an introductory performance and acting as master of ceremonies is noted bandura player Roy Torley. Roy with his wife Joan Gaustad composes the group North of the Black Sea. They will perform Ukrainian music using the bandura, the national instrument of Ukraine.

Church tours are planned with an explanation of Byzantine rite liturgy and use of icons, led by Fr. Richard Janowicz. Teresa Danovich will provide a continuing demonstration of icon writing (painting). Her work was displayed earlier this year as part of an iconography exhibition in the Gibbs Gallery of the Cottage Grove Community Center.

Sausages-kowbasa, baked goods, and soft drinks will be for sale, but those attending are encouraged to bring picnic lunches and blankets to sit on. Limited seating will be available.

Dance performances, tours, and demonstrations are free. Ukrainian souvenirs will be for sale.

It is estimated that more than 2,000 residents of Lane County share a Ukrainian heritage.

Sponsor of Veselka is the Nativity of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Community. All proceeds from the event help to support the dance group.
